1. Spot, understand, and work with clients’ non-verbal signals and double-signals.
2. Comprehend and modulate clients’ escalation and de-escalation, cross-blaming and symmetrical accusations.
3. Navigate clients’ roles, such as their tendency to identify as the aggrieved party and disown their own power and impact; the tendency of roles to flip and switch; and how these roles form part of a greater system.
4. Recognize and work effectively with dynamics of rank and privilege that may lead to heightened conflict and tension in Mediation and Collaborative Practice cases.
5. Address some of these same dynamics in your own Collaborative and Integrative Mediation teams and practice groups—e.g., the question of “non-locality,” which is when something that needs surfacing with the clients ends up surfacing within the team.
